Dorothy L. Thompson, age 91, of Elkhart, Indiana, peacefully passed away of natural causes on January 18, 2026. She was born on February 15, 1934, in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, to the late Grant McGill and Amelia Brown McGill.
Dorothy was a devoted wife, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, a lifelong educator, and a faithful servant of her community. Her life reflected dignity, purpose, and a deep commitment to faith, learning, and service.
Dorothy grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where strong values of faith, education, and perseverance shaped her character. She pursued higher education with determination and excellence, earning her Bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, and later her Master’s degree from the University of Indiana South Bend. Her academic achievements laid the foundation for a distinguished career dedicated to empowering others through education.
Dorothy shared a loving marriage of 63 years with her husband, Melvin H. Thompson, Sr. Their union was marked by devotion, mutual respect, and unwavering commitment to family. She was a cherished mother to Melvin Thompson, Jr. (Jackie) (Mishawaka, IN), and Alise Thompson (Elkhart, IN). Dorothy found great joy in her grandchildren: DeShone Barnett Thompson (South Bend, IN), Jalen Barnett Thompson (Elkhart, IN), Kierra Thompson (Goshen, IN), and Brandon Thompson (Ariel) (Indianapolis, IN). She is also lovingly remembered by her nephew, Clarence M. Wright, III, of Detroit, Michigan.
Dorothy dedicated 33 years of service as an educator. Teaching was not merely her profession—it was her calling. She inspired generations of students through her wisdom, patience, and genuine care, leaving a lasting impact on all who were blessed to learn from her.
A woman of deep faith and quiet strength, Dorothy remained actively engaged in her community throughout her life. She was an avid reader, a proud member of the NAACP, and faithfully served as a Steward and Trustee at St. James AME Church. She also attended Bethany Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she continued to grow spiritually and maintain a strong fellowship.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Grant McGill and Amelia Brown McGill; her brother, Horace McGill; her sister Alice McGill Wright, and her beloved husband, Melvin Thompson, Sr.
Dorothy L. Thompson leaves behind a powerful legacy of faith, education, love, and service. Her gentle spirit, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to family and community will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
